Jellies and Sardines @ Monterey Bay

On our recent trip to California we got to go to the Monterey Bay Acquarium. They have some really outstanding jelly fish exhibits. The first picture is of Katie and Ella standing in front of the big beautiful jellies.

The moon jellies have little phosphorescent bits that flash and light up.

I don't remember what these guys are called but they look really cool.

As I was choosing which pictures to put in this post, Ella saw this picture of a big school of sardines and said, "I really liked that class of sardines!" Indeed, they were very cool. They came racing by the glass and it was just a huge blur of silvery flashes of light. No wonder they travel in schools, it makes it very hard for predators to pick out an individual fish to target. This "Outer Bay" tank is enormous and it makes for some really good interactions. At one point a hammerhead shark thought it would try to go after a sardine but they just scattered in a blur.

Bisphenol-A or Goodbye Nalgenes

The time is now here when I'll have to say goodbye to my trusty polycarbonate Nalgene bottles. They contain Bisphenol-A (BPA), which many are saying helps cause cancer. Nalgene is stopping production of the hard, clear/colored bottles and changing to BPA-free materials.

Nalgene aren't the only ones though. Many baby bottles are made with materials containing BPA. Here are some resources to help you find a good BPA-free bottle for yourself and your children.

It's a little hard for me to get rid of these bottles. Between Katie and me, we have about 9-10 of these bottles and I've had them for a long time. Maybe I can re-purpose some of them as storage containers for non-food items.

My Fall Marathon

So I didn't win the St. George Marathon lottery this year. There were 10,500 entrants and only 7000 slots in the race and I didn't make it.

So... I just signed up for the Top of Utah Marathon in Logan, Utah. I got my undergraduate degree from Utah State U. in Logan so this will be a fun homecoming for me. The date of the race is September 20, 2008 so give me a shout if you are going to be in the area. You're more than welcome to come cheer me on.
